Library Director Diane Kresh writes about this year’s book, The Nine: Inside the Secret World of the Supreme Court:
Hello Arlington Readers,
What better time than now to take a look at that tradition-bound, mysterious group of nine very powerful people known as the United States Supreme Court?
With a new president promising “change” and a number of Court vacancies likely, Arlington Reads 2009 will explore the context of headlines soon-to-come through this year’s featured title, Jeffrey Toobin’s The Nine: Inside the Secret World of the
Supreme Court. We all have some idea how the president and Congress go about their business because we see them at work continuously, thanks to C-SPAN and 24-hour cable news. But the high court remains far removed from the “show business” of government, handing down lasting decisions without sound bites or photo
opportunities. As a result, the justices and their roles remain out of sight—and too often out of mind. That’s why The Nine is so valuable as both information and the starting point for our discussions. Being so close to the action,” Arlingtonians no doubt have some opinions about those who hand down the opinions. In fact, many of us have been able to call a justice or two “neighbor.”
The New York Times calls Toobin “a natural storyteller” and says The Nine is “engaging, erudite, candid and accessible, often hard to put down.” And best of all, Toobin, a senior analyst for CNN and staff writer at The New Yorker, will be joining us for an evening at Central Library’s auditorium on April 30 at 7 p.m.
The Nine will also be the subject of a countywide discussion at Central Library on Monday, April 13, at 7 p.m., plus the basis for a panel discussion of legal journalists at Shirlington Branch Library on Sunday, April 26, at 3 p.m.
I look forward to seeing you at these events and hearing your thoughts and opinions on the Supreme Court and Toobin’s valuable work. And be sure to regularly check this great blog we’ve set up for Arlington Reads, where information on all Arlington Reads 2009 events and offerings, including book clubs, can be found.
